Gemma Thompson brings you live updates from Soccer Aid as England take on the Rest of the World at Old Trafford… Sunday 6 June 2010.
18:30 Good evening from a very noisy Old Trafford. England are in town and that means so are those blasted horns which always seem to soundtrack an international match involving the Three Lions! I don’t mind really, they have certainly help make for an extremely lively atmosphere ahead of this year’s Soccer Aid match between England and the Rest of the World (ROW).
18:40 Robbie Williams’ England side are going for a hat-trick of victories this evening having run out winners in 2006 at Old Trafford and 2008 at Wembley. The Rest of the World will be determined to put at end to their losing streak and a certain Ryan Giggs could play a big part in helping them achieve that goal.
18:49 Yes, Giggsy will line up for the ROW this evening alongside a few other players who aren’t half bad with a football at their feet. I give you Zidane, Figo, Hyypia, Lehmann and former Red Larsson.
18:51 You’d think England would be quaking in their boots at the thought of facing that lot, but they have some pretty decent weapons in their armoury – Seaman, Shearer, Keown, Redknapp and two ex-United stars Butt and Sheringham.
19:02 Just so you know there are a couple of rules involving the legends’ involvement – each side can only have five legends on the pitch at any one time, in the first half there will be one legend in goal (Seaman for England, Lehmann for ROW) and four outfield. During the second period, all five will be outfield meaning a celebrity will go in goal for each team (Jamie Theakston for England and lifelong Red Patrick Kielty for ROW).
19:05 I’ve just uploaded some videos and pics – click on the links on the left. I spoke to stadium announcer Alan Keegan before the game and he’s going for a win for the ROW.
19:10 Oh and the game will be decided by a penalty shoot-out – just involving the celebrities – if the scores are level at full-time.
19:15 Tonight’s referee, Pierluigi Collina, is a well-known face to many Reds – he famously took charge of the 1999 Champions League final when United completed the Treble. I can still see him trying
his best to pick the Bayern Munich players off the floor after Teddy and Ole had brought us back from the dead. Altogether now ‘Who put the ball in the Germans’ net….’
19:22 This is the Rest of the World (ROW) starting XI: Lehmann; Jones, Larsson, Hyypia, Ramsay; Byrne, Sheen, Giggs, Calzaghe; Zidane, Myers.
19:24 I popped down to the team hotel last night and bumped into Giggsy. He’d been to the training days at Fulham’s training base on Thursday and Friday and really enjoyed himself. He’s determined to help the Rest of the World get a first victory over England.
19:25 We’re still waiting for full confirmation on the England XI, but Rupert Penry-Jones won’t be involved unfortunately as he got injured in training.
19:28 The teams will be with us any minute. Old Trafford is pretty full – about 65,000 fans here tonight and they’re making plenty of noise
19:29 Here’s the England team: Seaman; Shephard, Wilkes, Keown, Williams; Murs, Lewis, Redknapp, Little; Sheringham, Shearer.
19:30 The two squads enter the pitch to a huge ovation. United fan and opera star Russell Watson is now singing Nessun Dorma. Good way to get everyone into the World Cup spirit!
19:40 KICK-OFF – FIRST HALF. We’re off! Bizarrely former United striker Henrik Larsson is playing at the back alongside Hyypia!
19:43 England have started off pretty brightly although Larsson has just gone on a brilliant run forward before he was brought down by Shephard.
19:49 Damian Lewis has just hit the bar with a lovely flighted chip over Lehmann
19:50 It’s all happening now. Robbie gives the ball away to Zidane who looks for Nicky Byrne and he is tripped by Robbie in the area. Penalty to the Rest of the World.
19:52 Seaman has saved it! Nicky slipped as he took it, but Seaman guessed the right way. Nicky will be gutted about that – I showed him and bandmate Shane Filan round the ground last week and he was desperate to score. What a chance missed!
19:54 Giggsy just tried a nice little lob over Seaman’s head, but the former Arsenal man was equal to it.
19:57 There’s a good old battle going on between Robbie and Nicky Byrne down the right wing. Williams has just brought him down again! The ROW are enjoying some good possession at the moment. Still very random to see Austin Powers playing alongside Giggsy! Zidane has shown some fantasic touches so far.
20:01 What a chance for England as Shearer goes through on goal, but blasts well wide.
20:03 Brilliant run from Ben Shephard who is put through by Shearer, but his effort is straight at Lehmann.
20:08 The Manchester rain has decided to make an appearance! Brilliant save from Lehmann as Shearer let rip from the edge of the box.
20:15 Brilliant tackle from Giggsy as Olly Murs made a great run into the area. He was just about to pull the trigger when Ryan stepped in.
20:19 And there goes the Mexican wave – even both dug-outs are joining in!
20:24 Nice cross in from Robbie from the left but Lehmann leaps above Teddy
to claim. A minute of the half left to go.
20:26 GOAL! England 1 (Redknapp, 45’) – ROW 0. Brilliant goal from the manager’s son as he combines with Sheringham and Shearer before expertly curling the ball past Lehmann into the top corner. Old Trafford goes wild!
20:27 HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 1 – ROW 0. Redknapp’s lovely finish right on half-time is the difference between the two sides after a lively half in which Zidane and Giggs have excelled.
20:47 SECOND HALF As expected, there have been some changes. Michael Sheen, Ryan Giggs, Mike Myers and Jens Lehmann have been replaced by Shane Filan, Luis Figo, Brian Lara and Patrick Kielty (GK). England, meanwhile, bring on Jamie Theakston (GK) and Nicky Butt in place of Davd Seaman and Martin Keown.
20:52 Theakston is called into action straight away and makes a superb one-handed save from Nicky Byrne.
20:56 The ROW are lucky not to give a penalty away as Damian Lewis strides through the ROW defence. He is pulled back, but Mark Clattenburg – who has replaced Collina – waves away Lewis’ appeals.
21:02 Unlucky Teddy. The former Red clips the ball over Kielty only to see it bounce off the bar and over. Lovely effort.
21:04 GOAL! ENGLAND 2 (Sheringham, 60’) – ROW 0. The SAS combine as Shearer collects possession from Olly Murs and crosses for Teddy to head home in front of the Stretford End.
21:08 GOAL! ENGLAND 2 – ROW 1 (Calzaghe, 64’). Seconds after Larsson has a goal rightly disallowed for offside, Shane Filan crosses for the unmarked Calzaghe to slot home from five yards. Game on!
21:10 The SAS combine again as Sheringham puts Shearer through on goal, but Kielty does brilliantly to keep it out
21:12 In amongst all those goals and chances there have been a couple of substitutions. Ricky Hatton and Paddy McGuinness have replaced Robbie Williams and Olly Murs for England.
21:13 Chances at both ends as Redknapp lobs Kielty but sees the ball bounce onto roof of the net, while Lara and then Larsson see well-struck shots fly just wide at the other end.
21:16 Bradley Walsh has come on for Damian Lewis. Walsh has got No.50 on his back to mark his big birthday today.
21:17 ROW substitutions: James Kyson-Lee and Simon Baker are replacing Joe Calzaghe and Nicky Byrne.
21:19 Great tackle from Shephard in the area as Zidane was about to pull the trigger. Shephard has been immense again tonight.
21:21 GOAL! ENGLAND 2 – ROW 2 (Hyypia, 78’). The former Liverpool defender rises to meet a corner and the ball the bounces off his back and into the net. Just before that Woody Harrelson replaced Ramsay.
21:27 Dominic Cooper is on for Ben Shephard. It looks like we’ll be going to penalties.
21:32 We’ve just had the attendance confirmed as 65,493. That means a great deal of money has been raised for UNICEF.
21:33 Larsson has a chance to win it for the ROW, but Theakston makes a superb save with this feet. Still 2-2.
21:34 FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 2 – ROW 2. So it’ll be a penalty shoot-out between the
celebrities to decide who wins the Soccer Aid trophy.
21:45 PENALTY SHOOT-OUT. Jonathan Wilkes is up first for England. Kielty and Theakston will keep goal during the shoot-out.
21:46 ENGLAND 1 – ROW 0. Jonny sends Kielty the wrong way.
21:46 ENGLAND – 1 ROW 0. Jonny sends Kielty the wrong way.
21:47 ENGLAND 1 – ROW 1. Brian Lara squeezes it inside the post despite Theakston guessing the right way.
21:48 ENGLAND 1 – ROW 1. Ralf Little sees his penalty saved by Kielty.
21:49 ENGLAND 1 – ROW 1. Great save by Theakston from Nicky Byrne
21:50 ENGLAND 1 – ROW 1. Unbelievably it’s still 1-1 as McGuinness blasts way over.
21:51 ENGLAND 1 – ROW 2. Shane Filan scuffs his kick, but it’s in!
21:52 ENGLAND 2 – ROW 2. Superb penalty by Shephard into the top corner.
21:53 ENGLAND 2 – ROW 2. What a save from Theakston as he palms Ramsay’s penalty over the bar.
21:54 ENGLAND 2 – ROW 2. Oh no! Robbie’s blasted it over.
21:55 ENGLAND 2 – ROW 2. Unbelievable from Theakston as he prevents Gethin Jones from winning Soccer Aid for the ROW. We’re into sudden death.
21:56 ENGLAND 3 – ROW 2. Damian Lewis calmly tucks it away. The ROW must score their next kick or it’s all over.
21:57 ENGLAND 3 – ROW 3. Calzaghe calmly slots it into the bottom corner. Wow, it’s tense this!
21:58 ENGLAND 4 – ROW 3. He missed one at United Relief, but Olly Murs makes no mistake this time.
21:59 ENGLAND 4 – ROW 4. Michael Sheen scores with ease. We keep going!
22:00 ENGLAND 5 – ROW 4. Top corner from Ricky Hatton – very nice!
22:01 ENGLAND 5 – ROW 5. Kielty steps up to fire past fellow stopper Theakston.
22:02 ENGLAND 6 – ROW 5. The birthday boy Bradley Walsh puts England ahead once more.
22:03 ENGLAND 6 – ROW 6. We’re still going! Calm spot-kick from Mike Myers to level the scores again.
22:04 ENGLAND 6 – ROW 6. Oh no. Dominic Cooper has hit the bar. ROW can win it with the next kick.
22:05 ENGLAND 6 – ROW 6. The players really don’t want to go home do they?! Theakston has saved from Simon Baker.
22:06 ENGLAND 6 – ROW 6. This is the maddest penalty shoot-out I’ve ever seen! Theakston – England’s hero in the shoot-out has just fired over.
22:07 ENGLAND 6 – ROW 7. Rest Of the World are Soccer Aid champions! Woody Harrelson slots home to win the trophy for the Rest of the World.
22:08 A fantastic night’s entertainment at Old Trafford with the Rest of the World finally winning Soccer Aid at the third time of asking.
¡¡¡ CONGRATS TO REST OF THE WORLD TEAM !!!
